Entry Description
Hello, My name is Kenny Keo, I am a graduate of the class of 2010. During my Senior year at Edison, I was fortunate to have US Government with Mr.Kayannis or Mr.K as many of us called him. Mr.K is an interesting teacher because when teachers try to make the students interested in the topic at hand, they tend to make the students dislike the subject more, or lose interest altogether. Lecturing is also another topic I would like to bring up, whenever Mr.K gave a lecture, they were straight to the point and not full of filler which makes them even more boring. He also was straight to the point with the class if we were going to learn a unit that was lackluster in every way possible. Now most teachers would tend to just read from the book and give boring powerpoints that makes it boring for the class and leads to everyone falling asleep. Sure there were somedays where I wanted to sleep in class and they did happen but Mr.K made it so that we learned what we had to, and not in a terribly boring manner. Another thing is whenever we needed assistance on work during or after school, he was there to help out. He also helps out alot at Edison like working on organizing school activities like pep rally with others and etc... The student body at Edison is very diverse, rangin from African-Americans,Hispanic-Ame ricans, Middle-Eastern Americans, Asian-Americans, and many Caucasian-Americans. Mr.K is no stranger to diversity. He grew up in Ohio and lived in an area where African-Americans were predominant. He encountered racism and all that stuff but that did not stop him from trying to get along with other people regardless of color. He also has history in the US Military and law enforcement and all those things he learned from them he brings to the classroom. This from my perspective is very valuable experience because from my history of being in Public school, I have encountered teachers who do not know how to deal with a diverse student body. Since Mr.K is no stranger to this he was able to react to our class in a positive manner and never offended anyone. Asides from our class being diverse, we also had a small amount of students that just did not seem to try hard enough and were on the brink of failing. Throughout the Semester before it ended, we were all able to pass the class, even those who were not doing so well. It saddens me that not all teachers are like him because in other subjects I feel as though I haven't learned enough or am competent in that subject like mathematics. It made me laugh when Mr.K said he would be a bad math teacher but if he were to teach mathematics, I bet I would learn and pass the class with flying colors.
